The Hillside Dams

Situated 6 km from the city centre, granite outcrops and indigenous woodland surround two dams in the middle of the residential suburb of Hillside. This natural area is a protected game and bird sanctuary with walking trails and many quiet places tucked away from the city and its suburbs.

At Hillside Dams water birds splash across the open water and through the reeds as local fisherman with rough wooden sticks and lengths of fishing line cast out, hoping to hook ‘the catch of the day’. And in the sky above, you will often hear the sound of another ‘fisherman’ – the haunting cry of the African fish eagle.
