Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage

What Is Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage?

Chipangali is a Wildlife Orphanage just outside of Bulawayo, between the 24 and 25 km pegs on the Beit Bridge / Gwanda Road, on the right-hand side of the road.

Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage

We are a wild animal Orphanage and Rehabilitation Centre, so basically a haven for wild animals that have little hope for survival in the wild:- creatures that have been orphaned, abandoned, injured, born in captivity, or were former pets.

What Does Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage Do?

It is often the last refuge for sick and problem wild animals. Where possible, animals are released back into the wild, but if circumstances dictate otherwise, they become permanent residents and are incorporated into our EPIC Kids education program.

We have educated over 500,000 school children about the importance of our wildlife heritage. We visit schools on request in the greater Bulawayo area, with a snake, tortoise, chameleon, and hedgehog.

History Of Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage

Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage was founded by Viv and Paddy Wilson in May 1973 so as you have probably worked out, we turned 50 in May 2023. We aim to build links with other organisations and individuals and, hence, have become leaders both locally and internationally in the fields of Conservation, Education and Research.

Chipangali is currently under the curatorship of Mr. Kevin Wilson, Viv’s son, and his wife Nicky, with the help of their two children, Mickayla and Ryan Wilson.

What Is There To See?

Currently at Chipangali you have the opportunity to see Lions, Leopard, Spotted Hyena, Servals, Civet, Birds of Prey, Tortoise, Terrapin, Crocodiles, Kudu and Common Grey Duiker (antelopes), Snakes and various waterfowl.

We also have the Lady Di Center, which is at the orphanage, and this is where one will find all the domestic animals. This part of the Orphanage is free to visit, you only pay when you go in to see the wild animals.

In the Lady Di Center, we have our educational hall, and when we have power and there are lots of schools, we put up a jumping castle for the younger children. In the Lady Di Center, we have rabbits, ducks, chickens, pigeons, pigs, guinea pigs, sheep, and hopefully soon an indigenous fish aquarium.

Chipangali Entrance Fees

Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage prices valid for 2024 are:

US$6 per adult
US$5 per child

A child being between the ages of 3 and 13 (0 to 2 come in for free.)

We have an educational discount for school groups of more than 20 people, and that is US$4 per person.

We accept Bond, but only Bond cash or Ecocash we do not have swipe as the network out at the orphanage is terrible.

Opening Hours

Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage is open every day except usually on a Monday, unless the Monday is a public holiday then we will be open.  The only public holiday we are definitely closed for is Christmas Day, as we feel our staff also need to be with their own families on that special day.

Usually we are closed on a Monday.
