Garden Park Trust

The Garden Park Trust, the brainchild of the late Mrs. Doreen Dold, a former Mayoress of Bulawayo, was established in 1970 for the purpose of providing homes for the aged.

Funds were raised by the Friends of Garden Park, which is still very active, and the Bulawayo Homes for the Aged Building Fund, now defunct.

With the help of grants from the state lotteries and government, which are no longer available, and a 20-year interest-free loan from the government, building on a block of 24 flats commenced in 1972 on land granted to the trust by the City of Bulawayo.

Further blocks were built in 1977 and 1982, and today we have 67 one-bedroom flats, 56 cottages, and 20 terraces.

We have 171 residents and a waiting list of 106 persons for either original flats, cottages, or terraces.

Garden Park Trust also has full board and lodging facilities in our Garden Park House. We do not operate a frail care unit but do have a clinic that opens 3 days a week and a resident matron who is on call in case of an emergency.

We have a community center that facilitates numerous weekly functions for the residents, ranging from social braais, games afternoons, exercise classes, quiz evenings, movie nights, and bingo, to name a few.

Our accommodation is serviced by residents having a weekly gardener and free borehole water twice a week. There is a maintenance crew available for basic repairs.

Fawcett Security patrols the grounds and controls the entrance gate; all residents have a panic button, which they can activate in case of an emergency. The properties are insured, and the rentals are reasonably priced, varying on number of bedrooms and location of the residence.

Tsebo provides meals for “The House” as part of those residents’ full board, but other residents can buy meals as well.

A menu is posted on the social platforms every week.

Residents also have a newsletter, The Garden Tymes, which is delivered to them monthly, which also helps with general communication amongst residents.

The Garden Park Trust is controlled by three Bulawayo businessmen who are the trustees and a resident-elected committee that meets once a month.

The offices are manned by a staff of six, some of whom are part-time: a complex manager, an administrator, a security manager, a maintenance manager, a bookkeeper, and a receptionist.

The offices are open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 12:45.
