Nesbitt Castle
Nestled in the lush, leafy suburb of Hillside, Bulawayo, is Nesbitt Castle. This landmark is like a page torn from a Grimm Brothers’ storybook – a masterpiece of eccentricity, a stone-hewn monument to one man’s romantic vision, and a premier destination for anyone seeking a touch of medieval magic in the heart of Southern Africa.

The Visionary Behind the Stone
The story of the castle begins with Theodore Albert Edward Holdengarde, a South African-born businessman and former Mayor of Bulawayo. Holdengarde was a man of peculiar habits and grand dreams. Inspired by the medieval architecture he encountered while studying in Durham, England, he set out in 1910 to build a Gothic fortress – entirely without formal architectural plans.
As a “weekend builder,” Holdengarde spent over 30 years personally overseeing the construction, often tearing down sections and rebuilding them to satisfy his evolving whims. Legend has it he initially refused to install electricity or indoor plumbing, preferring the “authenticity” of the Middle Ages, much to the dismay of his family.
From Ruin to Royalty: A Brief History of Nesbitt Castle
After Holdengarde’s passing in 1948, the “Holdengarde Castle” fell into a period of melancholy decay. For years, it sat abandoned, eventually becoming a ruin inhabited by squatters.
In 1988, the property was purchased by Digby Nesbitt, who saw the potential beneath the overgrown vines and crumbling stone. Following an extensive and meticulous restoration, it was rechristened Nesbitt Castle and reopened in 1990 as a luxury boutique hotel, preserving the quirky spirit of its founder while adding the modern comforts Holdengarde had famously avoided.
The Architecture: Turrets, Towers, and Secrets
The castle is a marvel of Neo-Gothic architecture. Built primarily from hand-hewn local granite, its walls are incredibly thick—some spanning the width of a man’s outstretched arms.
The Layout: Expect a labyrinth of winding stone staircases, narrow passageways, and hidden nooks.
The Exterior: The silhouette is dominated by crenelated battlements, dramatic turrets, and arched windows.
The Grounds: The castle is surrounded by 16 acres of manicured gardens, secret forest paths, and serene ponds, making it a peaceful sanctuary from the city’s bustle.
Functions & Facilities
Today, Nesbitt Castle is renowned as Zimbabwe’s most romantic wedding venue, though it serves several other purposes:
Boutique Hotel: It features 10 uniquely decorated suites with names like The Royale and The Turret. Each room is filled with antiques, heavy drapes, and old-world charm.
Dining: The Coach House Restaurant offers fine dining in a regal atmosphere, while the on-site pub provides a cozy, “olde world” spot for a casual drink.
Events: It is a high-end choice for corporate conferences, private parties, and, of course, “fairy-tale” weddings.
Leisure: Facilities include a sauna, a fitness center, and a seasonal outdoor swimming pool tucked away in the greenery.
Whether you’re looking to book a stay or simply want to admire the architecture during a lunch at the restaurant, Nesbitt Castle remains a “must-see” in Bulawayo.
